Loretta Cordero

Loretta is a mother, sister, aunt and daughter, and have learned and realized the importance of our language and reclaiming the education of our Cochiti children.

Loretta is working towards her Assistance for Infancy diploma from the Southwest Institute of Montessori Studies. Loretta became a Montessori teacher in a way to give back to her community. They use Montessori as a tool to teach their ancestral language because they are an oral based language. Loretta started her language learning journey when she became apart of the KCLC community as a parent. She saw her daughter achieving academic excellence WHILE speaking Keres. and she knew that that was what she wanted to be apart of, she wanted to be able to teach her children in a way that she could have benefited from but didn't have access to. Loretta became a Montessori teacher because she know how important a school like KCLC is for our children, and it is something that she want for the next generations to come. Loretta am a certified primary guide through AMI, and now obtaining my A to I training. She chose to become a A to I guide for the same reasons, but also because of the unconscious absorbent mind. The children will take in all the language that is in their environment before they start talking and she knows that is so important for the future of her tribe.

Hereโ€™s what Loretta has to say about her scholarship year

I am committed to doing the hard work because our children deserve that chance. This scholarship will be very helpful in means of financial assistance for material purchasing and lodging while in Phoenix for in training. It would also be helpful being in a community where I know I can receive mentoring.
